Auckland Secondary Schools Gymsports

Artistic Gymnastics

At the Auckland Secondary School Gymsport Champs, MRGS performed extremely well and achieved pleasing results, and the senior girls loved wearing the new school leotards after wearing a 1970’s version for the last few years.

In gymnastics our two girls teams came first and second in their grade with Erin Weston, Sarah Deverell and Emily Ng earning 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Erin Weston also came first in A grade Tumbling with well executed tumble routines.

Hayden Ng placed 2nd in B Grade Mens.

Trampolining

Rachel Baptista and Ella Berlin were competing in their first competition and did exceptionally well due to all the training they had put in.

Brittany Conlon–Stepanicic qualified in the top 12 to compete in the finals and earned 5th place in her grade.  Well done Brittany as this was also her first competition.

In Mens B Grade Mark Yep was 2nd, and Hayden Ng 3rd.  Patrick Lee was 2nd in Mens C Grade.
Sarah Deverell moved up a grade this year from A grade to Elite womens and came 4th in this grade.

Mahurangi Sports Exchange

This year’s exchange took place on the 28th of April with Roskill 180 students heading northward. For the first time ever the Mt Roskill Kapa Haka group lead our party in the Powhiri, beginning proceedings with great passion and dignity. Mr Buckley and Ms Te Whiu had organised the day perfectly even laying on fine weather for the spectators. While the individual match reports follow it is sufficient to say that the games were played in magnificent spirit and while results might not have always gone our way everyone came away greatly rewarded from the experience.

Basketball U19 Girls (Mahurangi)

Team: Lita Vatuvei, Theresa Vi, Sera Waqa, Lucille Downe, Carnera Frost, Palu Malu, Leilani Marshall, Imran Salad, Tenisha Teura, Renae Toelau. The game got off to a passionate start with both teams confronting each other head on. Lita Vatuvei was quickly nicknamed “The Champion” with her efforts throughout the match, providing a solid block and scoring 10 of Roskill’s 36 points. Sera Waqa also took her shots at the basket scoring 8 more points. Theresa Vi took the chances of several key interceptions. Mr. Buckley provided some imperative coaching throughout the game. The teamwork and spirit of the Roskill team remained strong throughout as they fought valiantly against Mahurangi. The team got some interesting support through the chanting of the boys’ basketball team. In the end Roskill sadly lost 40-36.

Basketball U19 Boys (Mahurangi)

Team: William Fonua, Awot Hailemichael, Yueh-Ha Lai, Kevin Lam, Jamal Mohamed, Tata Nyunt, Jason Ou, Tony Pruksanunt, Parveer Singh, Josh Wilson. The under-19 boys basketball team went into the match confident and well prepared. Their intensive training showed in the opening quarters, where they extended their lead to over 10 points. Mt Roskill fought hard to keep this lead, with Josh Wilson and Tata Nyunt providing strong leadership and good play. The Mahurangi team proved to be a challenge for Mt Roskill and they had to work hard to stay on top. Unfortunately, Mahurangi kept nibbling away at our lead before overtaking us in the fourth quarter to end the match 51-47 to Mahurangi College. Teacher in charge- Mr C. Buckley.

Netball Intermediate 1 (Mahurangi)

Team: Louann Campos, Florence Fialua, Teukialupe Havea, Nancy Hoeter, Imasha Kumarawansa, Kristal Manase, Temalisi Piutau, Telesia Sevele, Esther Usumaki. Teacher in charge- Ms. A. Harvie. One of the first games of the day, the Intermediate Girl’s netball team worked hard to open the overall innings in Mt Roskill’s favour. The girls put up a strong fight against Mahurangi, keeping the opposition on their toes throughout the game. Proficient passing and solid attack and defence helped the girls to a close finish, which went Mahurangi’s way with a closing score of 19-17.

1st XI Soccer Boys (Mahurangi)

Team: Ahmad Alshamsi, Enes Cenkci, Devneel Chand, Caleb Deverell, Naweed Faghiyar, Kris Gounder, Jacky Lin, Metia Lisati, Paudel Aalok, Aakash Rai, Omar Sawaiz, Ameer Sing, Ben Speedy, Masillan Veejian, Anfernee Yee, Teacher in charge- Mr A. Rankin. After the loss of the girls 1st eleven soccer team to Mahurangi, the boys were determined to do better in their match. Although the game started sluggishly in the first half, Mt Roskill scored the opening goal thanks to Devneel Chand. Mahurangi made several close attempts but none quite entered the net. In the second half, both teams picked up their game, especially their offence, with Ben Speedy skilfully marking the opposition. Strong defence and fantastic work by all the players ensured that the three goals by Mt Roskill went unanswered, with a final score of 3-0 to Mt Roskill.

1st XI Hockey Boys (Mahurangi)

From the first whistle the 1st XI hockey boys began to dominate the Mahurangi side. Within the first five minutes Roskill had scored and not long after had scored once more. However, playing as a new team, Mahurangi managed to score a goal after half time, bringing the final score to 2-1 to Roskill. Exceptional play from the entire team. Goal scorers were Vishal Patel and Eshan Taio. Special thanks goes to Mr Hays our coach, for organsing the team, and Year 13 students Jaiman Patel, Kiran Ramji and Aditya Verma for having an awesome last ever exchange.

1st XI Hockey Girls (Mahurangi)

Mount Roskill First eleven girls put on a great performance against Mahurangi College. Our annual exchange is always tough and this year was no exception! After being un-prepared due to a very hasty time change we took a hit and were down 4 - nil in the first ten minutes. Once everyone was all fired up, it was time to fight back and show everyone why we are the first eleven. By the end of the first half we had managed to work together and get the ball in the back of the goal. With a final score of 6 - 4 to Mahurangi, we were very proud of our game, how well we pulled together as a team, our goal scorers Amelia, Alana and Michelle(2) and how, right to the last whistle, there was no sign of giving up.

Dragon Boating

The Auckland Secondary Schools Dragon Boating Festival was held on the 14th of March at Lake Pupuke. Mt Roskill Grammar was well represented by our strong team of dragon boaters who all arrived promptly on Sunday morning. Taking the early start in their stride, the team was ready to give it their all and put to use all the skills they had learnt over the training period of six weeks.

We participated in four races of which three were heats and one was a final. We did well in all three heats, finishing with commendable times. All a little tired from the first three races, we had a well-deserved lunch break and then returned for our final race. All the girls put in a huge effort and the MRGS Dragon Boating Team was placed fourth in their division.

A special thank you to Megan and Annaliesa for being great callers and Aditya for his steering expertise. Most importantly, thank you to Mr Williams, Ms Strickland and Mrs Hodge for all the organisation, transport and encouragement. 2010 was another awesome season, good luck to all the year thirteens, we'll miss you next year, and for those still at school, look forward to another season of dragon boating come 2011.

Cricket 1st XI (March)

This team has made a good start to the year reaching the 3rd round of the Gillette Cup for the first time in a number of years. There have been two outstanding performances from Term One. Sanchut Chopra scored a memorable 135 against St Kent’s, while the youngest member of the side and opening batsman Karan Banker scored 3 half centuries.

Senior Girls Volleyball (March)

This team has had a fantastic season. The team won the Auckland Central Zone competition going through the season undefeated. They then went onto finish a creditable 8th place at the Greater Auckland Volleyball Championship. The girls should be congratulated for their hard work and dedication. Special thanks must go to Caroline Arthur and Fale Malifa for their outstanding coaching.

Fencing

Mount Roskill fencing team has got off to a flying start. 35 students make up the 2010 summer team and Hamish Bulmer has already gained a 3rd placing in Sabre in his first competition of the season. Students interested in joining the team for the winter squad should approach Mr Thompson towards the end of term 2 to register interest.

Senior Girls Volleyball (February)

  • vs MAGS Premiers 2-0 (Win)
  • vs DIO 2-0 (Win)

The Senior girls volleyball team played very well against MAGS and Dio on Thursday 18th February with the player of the day, Rosa Toleafoa, helping the team along with her massive serves. On Thursday 25th the girls play their last home games against Baradene who is below them on the points table and Onehunga who like Mt Roskill remain undefeated.
Coaches – Mrs C Arthur and Mr F Malifa (parent coaches).

Cricket 1st XI (February)

2010 Students´ Sports Fee Policy

All students involved in sport should now have paid their fees associated with their sport.
Due to a change in funding from the government for school sport, MRGS will be applying a pay before you play policy effective from the 1st Feb 2010. Students intending to play for a school sports team will be required to pay the full sports fee upfront or a $30 deposit before trialling (where a trial is held). This upfront payment will assist the school in covering the costs of running a successful sports program. If financial assistance is required contact Mr Clinton Buckley (Director of Sport) to organise a part payment plan or fundraising activity.

Volunteers for Sports

The Sport Department are looking for Coaches, Managers and Transport providers. If you have the time or the passion for sport please contact Mr Buckley Director of Sport on 6210050 ext 891. Whether you are a parent or ex student we would love to have your help. Parent help is essential in a large school like MRGS with well over 100 sports teams representing the school. Helping your child’s sport is an excellent way of becoming involved with school.

We acknowledge and thank many wonderful parents and volunteers who give of their time and effort to assist our students in achieving to their full potential on the sporting field.

Hockey Academy

The Year 9 Hockey Sports Academy has begun with two in-school trainings a week and a theory and fitness class before school on Wednesday mornings. It is an exciting time for these students who are receiving top quality coaching. The aim of this Academy is to offer a programme designed for top performing athletes.

Swimming Championship/Carnival

Both events have taken place already this term. The carnival was smaller than in previous years with only Year 9 & 10 students participating. All involved enjoyed the fun afternoon. Visit the photo gallery to see some photos.

Mixed Touch Team NZSS Tournament

NZ SECONDARY SCHOOL TOUCH NATIONALS, Palmerston North, 10 – 14 December 2009

It was with much excitement and “steps into the unknown” that the team left  to experience the intensity of the NZ Secondary School Touch Nationals. After a long drive we arrived in Palmerston North. A quick unpack, and we were off to the venue for an orientation walk around and practice. This was a time to stretch and focus on the days ahead.

Day 1:

Game 1 we were drawn to play St Andrew’s College. The players were nervous at the start but steadily started to string “sets” together. Unfortunately they could not maintain this in the second half.  Dropped balls and a lack of focus cost us the game and we went down 8 – 2. Touchdowns: Reece – 2. We needed to work on putting in the “hard yards” for Game 2 vs Massey High School. This game also started well, with both teams scoring touchdowns. Again a lack of focus on “settling” crept into our play. We eventually went down 7 – 2. Touchdowns: Reece – 1  Esi – 1. Our final game for the day was played at 5.40 pm vs Wainuiomata High School. The long day and intense competition was taking its toll on our players.  Injuries and sore bodies featured in our 5 – 2 loss. Touchdowns:  Reece – 1  Pat – 1.

Day 2

On Day 2 of the competition, we were placed in Division 2, playing teams similar to ours. We were hoping that the results would be better and we were still looking for that elusive win. Game 1 vs Lincoln High School – what a game!  Both teams traded touchdowns throughout the game. We were up by 1 with 5 minutes to go. Lincoln were camped on our line for the final moments but our team dug deep and held on to win 4 – 3. This was a great boost to morale. Finally the important “win” at nationals! Touchdowns:  Reece – 2  Oshan – 1  Pat – 1.  For our second game we played Botany College. We were in the game at half time but brought back to reality with Botany winning 9 – 4.  Injuries and lack of fitness again took their toll. However, we managed 4 touchdowns:  Reece – 2  Ritchie – 2. In Game 3 we played Nayland College. This game was a cliff-hanger, trading touchdown for touchdown all game. In the final seconds Nayland scored, winning 7 – 6. Touchdowns:  Reece – 3  Anthony – 1  Pat – 1.

Day 3

Finals Day. Game 1 pitted us against Trident High School. The winner of this game would play off for 13th and 14th. Our team fought hard and didn’t give up but the past 3 days had left us tired and we were still carrying injuries. We lost 5-4. Touchdowns: Reece – 2  Pat – 2.

It has been my pleasure to coach these young people. They tried their best and gave their all. Learn from the experience in Palmerston North and develop your individual skills in the game. Believe in yourselves and you will achieve. For those seniors leaving, I wish you the best. For those staying at school I issue a challenge. Work hard and get back to Nationals next year – fitter, focused and proud of your team and your school.
