Information about our Digital Photography Tutor and Courses

Our digital photography tutor, Bret Lucas is a professional photographer.  He has many national awards to his name and is the current Kodak Photographer of the Year.  You can view his work at www.fstopstudios.co.nz.

Your own digital camera is essential for all courses - you can use either a compact or DSLR.

This year we are offering a range of new workshop courses: City Shooting, Photographing People (Portraits) and Still Life Photography.  These workshop courses are suitable for students with some experience of photography who are familiar with their cameras.  All workshop courses take place over three evenings, finishing with a final class on a Saturday.

Digital Photography and Photoshop - An Introduction

  • Tutor: Bret Lucas
  • Time: 7-9pm
  • Term 1: Wednesday, 12 February 2012
  • Term 2: Wednesday, 9 May 2012
  • Duration:  Every Wednesday for 6 weeks
  • Fee: $80

Learn how to use and get more from your digital camera.  Course also covers downloading photographs to the computer, manipulating images using Photoshop Elements, scanning and printing, creating slideshows and burning to disc. Your own camera is essential - both compact or DSLR cameras are suitable for this course

City Shooting

  • Tutor: Bret Lucas
  • Term 1: starts Tuesday 14 February  7-9pm, 3 weeks + Saturday 3 March
  • Term 2: no class
  • Fee: $150

Learn how to connect with your environment to capture beautiful city scape images. Course will also cover composition aspects of architectural shooting.  Also learn how  to use the city as a backdrop for shooting people – one session will be held using a model.  This course will take place at different locations around the city – enrolled students will be sent a list. Your own camera is essential - either a compact or DSLR.  Suitable for students with some experience of photography who are familiar with their cameras.

Photographing People (Portraits)

  • Tutor: Bret Lucas
  • Term 1: starts Tuesday 13 March 2012, 7-9pm, 3 weeks + Saturday 31 March
  • Term 2: starts Tuesday 5 June 2012, 7-9pm, 3 weeks, + Saturday 23 June
  • Fee: $150

Learn how to capture beautiful images of people in both ambient light and flash. Course will cover connecting with your subject, compositition and clothing. In the first 3 weeks, students will practise shooting other students in the class.  The final week will be a 3 hour session held at Bret’s commerical studios with a live shoot of a model. Your own camera is essential - either a compact or DSLR.  Suitable for people with some experience of photography who are familiar with their camera.

Still Life Photography

  • Tutor: Bret Lucas
  • Term 1: no class
  • Term 2: starts Tuesday 8 May 2012, 7-9pm, 3 weeks + Saturday 26 May
  • Fee: $150

Learn how to compose and shoot still life effectively.  You will photograph a range of still life including flower arrangements and food.  Final week will be held in Bowman’s Restaurant shooting food by top chefs. Your own camera is essential - either a compact or DSLR.  Course suitable for people with some experience of photography who are familiar with their camera.
