Debating

Junior and Senior clubs operate for students who enjoy public speaking and these clubs compete in inter-school competition.

Traditionally there is a high level of interest in being involved in a debating team at MRGS, so much so that we have to run auditions to choose the best debaters to be in our teams.  Usually we have two or three junior teams (yrs 9 or 10), two senior teams (yrs 11 & 12) and one or two advanced teams (yr 13). Teams consist of up to five people and the speakers for each debate are decided upon by the team in advance of the debate.

The debating season runs from March to July and teams usually compete in approximately six round-robin debates before the eliminations begin leading to the finals. This means that once the season has started there is a debate about once every two or three weeks excluding holidays. Debates occur after school on a different evening of the week depending on what grade your team is in. Students should expect to be involved in regular meetings to practice and prepare for debates.
