There are many chances to study overseas whilst a Mount Roskill Grammar School student. If you require information on any of these exchange programmes, please contact Ms Harding on ph (09) 6210050 ext 756.
Seirinkan High School, Tsushimi, Japan
Seirinkan High School is a private school near Nagoya and for several years now students from Mt Roskill and Seirinkan have been participating in an exchange scheme, staying in each other’s homes in Japan and NZ for periods varying from six weeks to nine months.
Students are required to host Seirinkan High School students in their homes, before travelling to Japan for a similar length of time. Costs involved are airfare, insurance and pocket money. Parents should allow up to $2,000 for airfare and approximately $60 per week pocket money whilst in Japan.
Mount Roskill students who wish to participate in this scheme must be learning Japanese, have good school reports, attendance and attitude. This is a wonderful chance for New Zealand students to become immersed in Japanese culture.
Japan Trip (2 Weeks)
Every two years we take a group of students on an escorted visit to Japan. During their time away they visit schools in Tokyo and are hosted by local families as well as staying in Japanese Ryokan (traditional Japanese hotels). Students return with an increased ability to speak Japanese and a taste of a culture very different from ours.
AFS, EF, NZIUU, Rotary
Six months in Canada? Or USA? Italy? China?
A number of companies offer the chance to study overseas for 6 months or one year in most countries of the world and Ms Harding has more information. Costs are around $10,000 and there is no obligation to host a student in your home.
Should you wish to host an AFS or EF student, or require more information, please contact Ms Harding.
In 2009 we hosted our first German students from Brecht Schulen in Hamburg. Lukas and Phillip really enjoyed their six weeks here and Vincent had a superb time in Hamburg over Christmas 2009/New Year 2010. We will be continuing with this exchange in 2011/2012 and welcome applications from students who wish to participate. Costs for airfare will be around $2,800; there is a compulsory trip to Berlin costing approximately $500 plus pocket money.
In February 2007, Mt Roskill Grammar School hosted our French Exchange School from Normandy in France, the Lycée Jean XXIII from Yvetot. The exchange was for two weeks in Term 1 and we hosted 21 pupils and 2 teachers. The students and schools involved are privileged to have these opportunities to discover other cultures and languages and to be able to build life-long friendships. During the two-week stay, the French pupils experienced life in a typical large Auckland school and were involved in many trips and family outings. These trips included a one day trip to TiriTiri Matangi Island and a 2 day Rotorua trip. Thanks go to the principals (Mr Greg Watson and Mr Alain Lefèbvre), senior management and boards of both schools who are dedicated to this exchange as well as to the France-New Zealand Friendship Fund which supported the tours.
In February/March 2009 we are again hosted Jean XXIII. A number of teachers ran seminars for the group including NZ Film, NZ Art, NZ Fauna & Flora and NZ People & Places. The French School was ably led by the same two teachers who were here in 2007, namely Mme. Françoise Marotel (English Teacher) and M. Frédéric Hyvert (Deputy Principal and Surveying Teacher). The next planned MRGS France Homestay Tour is for September 2010.
