MRGS has one Senior Boys Water Polo team coached by Stephen Bensley. Their season starts from the beginning of the year, until about week 3 of Term Two, with training weekly (often with 2/3 trainings a week) at either Epsom Girls Grammar or Westwave in Henderson. This year, the first training was the week before school began, and the season has started off with a loss to Auckland Grammar and a win against St Peters College.
In 2008, the team was placed as runner-up in the North Island Secondary Schools B-grade Tournament, losing to Hutt Valley High School who they had previously beaten in pool play. They also competed in the National B-grade Division Two Tournament in Hamilton, where they were placed 7th in 2007 and won the Bowl championship in 2008.
This year, the team has 11 players (short of a full 13 players) with 6 new players joining the 5 more experienced players from previous years. Every year the team has to rebuild due to older players leaving and younger players entering the team after playing in the juniors teams in previous years. In recent years, the team’s defence has been a major key to their success in the B-grade competitions, from the Auckland championships to National tournaments. They hope to continue their success in 2009.
