Courses

This page outlines the course structure for students at all levels at Mount Roskill Grammar School.

Academic enrichment and support programmes, where individually appropriate, are provided.

YEAR 9

Most students take a common core of six subjects: English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, Language study (Maori or French or Japanese) and Physical Education. Those students needing support with basic literacy are provided with support in this area in place of the language. Students are given introductory courses in a full range of subjects to enable them to make a more informed selection for their future years at school. The subjects include Art, Music, Graphics, Business Education, Health, Food Technology, Workshop Technology and Communication and Information Technology.

YEAR 10

All students continue a common core of five subjects: English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science and Physical Education. In addition they select a number of option subjects from a wide range. The courses for option subjects may last for a half or a full year. All students have one period of Health per week.

YEAR 11

All students take English, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education and two or three other subjects. Most students will study at NCEA (National Certificate of Educational Achievement) Level 1. NCEA study consists of Achievement Standards and Unit Standards on the National Qualifications Framework.

YEAR 12

Entry to Year 12 courses is based on results achieved in Year 11 results with Heads of Departments having discretion in borderline cases. The entry requirements are detailed in the Academic Programme Booklet. All students take English and Physical Education and four other subjects

YEAR 13

All fifth year students are considered Year 13 students, and may wear the distinctive Year 13 jersey. Entry to Level 3 NCEA classes is based on previous results at the discretion of Heads of Departments. The entry requirements are detailed in the Academic Programme Booklet. Students are allowed to return for a sixth year of schooling only at the discretion of the Principal.
