English - Tuhinga Ingarihi

Ko te reo te tuakiri
Ko te reo tāku ahurei
Ko te reo te ora.

Language is my identity.
Language is my uniqueness
Language is my life.

The English Department reflects the school mission statement in its policies and practices by aiming to “develop the personal potential, social responsibility and respect for individual and cultural differences of all students” at Mt Roskill Grammar School.

English is the study, use, and enjoyment of the English language and its literature, communicated orally, visually and in writing, for a range of purposes and audiences and in a variety of text forms. The English Department is passionate about promoting respect for, and love of, literature and learning. We see learners as central and believe that programmes should affirm and celebrate their experiences and backgrounds, and broaden their cultural perspectives. By knowing our students well, and providing appropriately challenging work, the English Department aims to develop independent thinkers who are responsible for their own learning and respect and celebrate others’ efforts and success.
