Food and Hospitality - Hangarau Kai
The Food and Hospitality Department offers courses in Food Technology at junior level and Food and Hospitality or Food and Nutrition at senior level. At senior level we work closely with both the Hospitality Standards Institute (HSI) and the Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) - as part of their Schools Partnership Programme. Students cover units of work in both Cookery and Food and Beverage. They also assist with Catering. This year we entered two students in the MIT Secondary Schools Barista Competition and both were awarded silver medals.
The department has two well equipped Foods rooms. One room is used by junior classes and the semi commercial kitchen is for senior use. A restaurant room is linked to the senior kitchen suitable for students to use when catering for small functions. An espresso machine is well used in the training of Year 13 students in the making of espresso beverages.
