Te Tari Mātauranga Māori

 Ko tāku whakahirahira,
tāku wehi, tāku whakatiketike,
tāku reo.

My language is my greatness,
my inspiration,
that which I hold precious.

Ko Ngā Tino Whāinga

Te Tari Mātauranga Māori aims to provide a comfortable learning environment for all students and encourages students to have pride in their heritage, language and culture. All unit aims include:

  • Competence in written and spoken Māori, through the use of a range of authentic language rich activities;
  • A genuine respect for Māori customs and protocol;
  • Respect for one’s own culture, respect and appreciation of other cultures;
  • High achievement at all year levels across all subject areas through the support of campus teachers.

Students will be able to communicate in Te Reo Māori about everyday activities and express their feelings and opinions about a range of topics. The course includes the use of the Schools Whare Wānanga Te Puāwaitanga o Te Mātauranga (The Blossoming of Knowledge), multi media as well as textbooks and course books. Students become confident in all language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Every year the Kura takes the senior Te Reo Māori students on a marae noho to Te Ohaaki in the far north of Aotearoa. This haerenga is used to further help and encourage our students in becoming confident and independent in the language through authentic learning experiences.

Te Reo Māori Students can embark on an exciting challenging pathway as they look to gain lifetime skills, experiences and an appreciation of Te Iwi Māori.

Ngā kupu rongonui a Tā Apirana Ngata

‘E tipu e rea, mō ngā rā o tāu ao, ko tāu ringa ki ngā rākau a te Pākehā hei ara mō tāu tinana: ko tāu ngākau ki ngā taonga a āu tūpuna Māori hei tikitiki mō tāu rae: ko tāu wairua ki tāu Atua nāna nei ngā mea katoa.'

‘Grow up, little one, in the way of your day and age, your hands grasping the tools of the Pākehā for your physical well-being, remembering in your heart the works of your ancestors which are worthy of being worn as a diadem upon your brow; your soul ever turned toward your God, who is the creator of all things.’
