Trip to Turkey

At the end of May, Ms Harding and Mrs Reid travelled to Turkey to participate in an Educational and Cultural study tour organised by the Pearl of the Islands Foundation. The tour was designed to strengthen existing relations between Mt Roskill Grammar School, the Turkish foundation (PIF), Turkish agents and the families of our Turkish students. We were also able to build bridges and gain understanding of Turkish culture by interacting with families, business people, cultural representatives and by touring around schools and well known sites.

An amazing feature of the Turkish culture is interaction. Firstly, it was noticeable how ‘old Turkey’ is interfacing with ‘progressive Turkey’. Historical buildings stand next to new, the ancient call to prayer is achieved using new speaker systems and hand pulled carts share the same road as new BMW’s.

The other aspect is building relationships. Men sit outside shops drinking tea and chatting, in the cities business men are constantly on their mobile phones or meeting with associates, and having a meal can be a long affair with lots of talking. The people are friendly, generous and welcoming.

While it was wonderful to see the history and some of the sites of Turkey, the best part of the trip was spending time with the families of our Turkish students. We enjoyed delicious food, warm company and gained valuable understanding of how difficult it can be to leave a loving family to study in a new language and culture.

International Students´ Orientation Trip – May 2010

On May 7th, 30 New International students and 3 International staff went on an Orientation trip, to introduce students to Auckland and help them make new friends from other cultures.

We went by bus to Takapuna for a game of Ten Pen Bowling and then stopped off at Devonport before going to North Head.  Students enjoyed exploring the tunnels in the dark, reading information about the guns and the history of the naval base.  It was also great to see the Auckland skyline and walk around to the beach on the Northern side of North Head. Students were able to sit and chat about their experiences so far at MRGS and Auckland and what they want to do in the future.

2009 Review

During 2009 Mount Roskill Grammar School has been the host of around 90 international students from China, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Germany, Turkey, India, Fiji, Vietnam, Tonga, Samoa, Sweden, Singapore and Thailand.

Orientation

International students take part in an orientation class when they arrive, to help them adjust to their new culture and school.  During this session new students learn about how our school works, local road rules, how to behave in home-stay and even what sayings like “she’ll be right”, “bring a plate” and “grab your togs” mean.

They also enjoy an orientation trip to become familiar with Auckland.  Each year we do two trips for new students.  The first trip in February we visited the Mount Albert Grammar School farm to feed pigs, hold rabbits, milk a cow and watch a sheep being sheared.  We also went to the top of Mount Eden to see a view of Auckland and then to Devonport and North Head to visit the tunnels.

For our second trip in August we went Ice-skating, then up the Sky Tower and back to North Head to the tunnels and a walk around the beach.  Both days we were treated to beautiful weather and a bunch of about 25 new students.

Pizza lunch - All International students are also treated to a pizza lunch once a term – the pizza’s don't last very long!

Student leaders

Our student leaders this year are Shiori Anegawa (Japanese),  Kevin Xue (Chinese) and Tony Oh (Korean). Our student leaders come on the orientation trips, and do a valuable job as interpreters and mentors for new students.
