Consent Awareness Week 150 150 Simon Whitlock

Consent Awareness Week

Week 5 was Mount Roskill Grammar School’s fourth “Consent Awareness Week” run by the Peer Sexuality Support Programme team.
During this week, we raise awareness about the New Zealand law and sexual consent. Consent is needed before you can have sexual contact with someone else. Consent is a free agreement between people, and cannot be coerced, pressured and forced. Consent can be withdrawn at any time.
To be able to give consent, you need to be 16 and over and clear minded (not drunk or under the influence of drugs).
It is the older person’s responsibility to ensure the person they are with is 16 or older. This law exists to protect young people from being exploited by older people.

Dowdle Library 30th Birthday 150 150 Simon Whitlock

Dowdle Library 30th Birthday

MRGS had a blast celebrating the library’s 30th Birthday in May. With musical performances, quiz and competitions. We also had the previous 30 years of SURSUM magazine on display which proved very popular with students looking up older siblings and even parents!

The winners of the Young Adult Literature Quiz were Saad Riazuddin and Dev Ratra.  Runners up were Sui Kosi, Liahona Lauano, Manu-Pule Uaisele, and Fina Malolo.

The winners of the competition to guess ‘how many books the library has” were Rohaan Rehman and Jassen Scanlan who both guessed 14,000 (answer 13,789). The runners up were Joshlyn Iyekekpolo, Amon Jeganathan, Eli Subramoney, and Dennon Fernando.

Congratulations to all that participated!!

And HAPPY 30TH BIRTHDAY TO Dowdle Library!

Year 9 Health Presentation 150 150 Simon Whitlock

Year 9 Health Presentation

On Tuesday 21 May all Year 9 classes experienced education through a creative theatre workshop, The Smashed Project. This workshop focused on awareness and confidence to make responsible
choices around alcohol. Our year 9s were engaged in a unique way, allowing them to explore the causes and consequences of underage drinking in a safe and motivating learning environment enabling them to make positive choices when faced with peer pressure.
As this was the first time this group presented in NZ we had three of our students joined by Hillary Barry for an interview which appeared on Seven Sharp. Travis Noa, Jireh Stitt and Joshlyn Iyekekpolo talked from a student’s perspective about the issues around alcohol for teenagers.

Consent Awareness week 150 150 admin

Consent Awareness week

Consent Awareness Week: Thanks to our fantastic PSSP team for leading the way on consent.

It is crucial that our students are exposed to the question, “Are you ok with this?”. Given how important appearing cool is, it is often embarrassing or difficult for students to ask for consent even when they want to. “Are you ok with this?” is the simple, inoffensive question that answers this issue.
