Last week, four Year 12 Biology classes went to Tōtara Park over two days to learn about NZ’s native forests and the species that live there.

They were observing stratification patterns (forest layering patterns). During the trip, they walked through Tōtara Park with Auckland Council rangers who provided information about the plants and adaptations.

Students also collected data by performing a transect of the plants (dividing the plants by cutting them) and then plotting their actual data on a tree profile diagram, which serves as a snapshot of the forest layers.
