Career Services in Mt Roskill Grammar School

The HOD Careers is available in H4 before school, after school, at interval and lunchtime to students of all levels for short discussions about future education, training, career pathways and job search. No appointments are required during these times.

Students with career issues can request one-on-one interviews either by seeing the HOD Careers in H4 or emailing careers@mrgs.school.nz. This service is open to students at all levels within the school and includes assistance with CVs and job search.

Every Year 13 student will be interviewed during the year. These interviews are in-depth and there is an opportunity for follow up when needed.

Year 12 students are interviewed on a case-by-case basis, along with students thinking of leaving school before Year 13.  Year 10 and 11 can request interviews and receive specific help with options as requested.

CV and Job Search workshops are held regularly in H4. This service is available to all senior students.

Through the Junior School Career Education Programme, students are encouraged to begin the process of career exploration by looking at themselves, their interests and skills and by learning how to relate these to their eventual career choice. Decision-making skills are also taught.

A range of guest speakers from universities, P.T.Es, trades training, Defence Forces, Police etc. are invited to speak to interested students of all levels about their courses, entry requirements and the related job markets. These speakers usually come to H5 on Thursdays at lunchtime.

Māori and Pasifika students attend a number of career events, such as KATTI, PILOT and STEAM involving tertiary institutions and other relevant agencies. Some Mt Roskill Grammar students have also attended the Rangatahi Programme organised by the Auckland District Health Board.  The HOD Careers and tertiary providers attend Mt Roskill Grammar Maori and Pasifika Parents’ Evenings as required.

Trips to a range of providers are organised for students who are considering leaving school before the end of the year. Other trip opportunities, such as Enginuity Day, Open Days at The University of Auckland and AUT and trips to Unitec are organised each year. The HOD Careers will also help students get in touch with providers to talk about courses on a one-on-one basis.

STAR Taster courses are organised for students to check out courses and course providers as required.

If you would like to contact the HOD Careers, you are welcome to phone her on the school number or to email her at ann.hodge@mrgs.school.nz
